Following up

A few weeks ago, many of you gave me terrific ideas for making 'ho ho like icing' for my friends baby shower. The cake came out ok. Everyone seemed to love it but I am to hard on myself and say only the imperfections. That's what happens when you give yourself 6 hours for baking, cooling, icing, going out to buy more ingredients, baking, cooling, icing, covering with fondant and decorating..... all in one night when you are sick. :)

Any tips or techniques would be appreciated.

This is the candy wrapper the cake was designed around

No Thanks-- I Have Them on Speed Dial.

CSR to friend: So apparently my lymphedema makes me more likely to get cancer in the future...
Boss, interrupting: That's a relief. Not that I'd wish cancer on you. More the fact that you're more likely to get it than me. I like that sort of news. We need more of that around here! (walks off).
CSR's friend: Here's HR's number.

Advice

Hello all you marvelous cake decoraters! I've been an avid reader/lurker of the community for the longest time and am constantly in awe of the amazing cakes that you all create.

I am looking to learn/self teach cake decorating and my partner is willing to buy me some tools/supplies to help me get started. I've looked on various websites and I see that Wilton tools/accessories are a common theme. Are they worth the money?

Basically, what do you think are the most necessary items to get started? What are the tools you can't live without?

I live in Perth, Australia and haven't seen many shops so I think I would be ordering online.

Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Guido: Excuse me, miss? Miss? Have I seen you in my church?
20-something girl: No.
Guido: No, no, I definitely saw you in my church. We go to the same one.
20-something girl, sighing: Sir... If I went to any house of worship, it'd be a synagogue. And I stay as far away from those as possible. Have a nice day now.
Guido: Aaaaawww, I liiike you!

Macro my cat-dad?

Alright, so I know that of the posters here, he's not the most prolific, but I've got a macro request.

I gave my father, [info]tenorvox his copy of photoslop that has enabled him to come up with the awesome macros he's come up with. Now I ask you, people of this community, to macro my FATHER....with cats.

I've kept these requested macro pictures on topic, because he happens to be in the frame with cats! they're not the funniest pictures ever, but I do think that something could be made from them....

Also, I thought it would be a nice gift for him since he's got a seriously busy weekend. He's singing ALL the male parts in La Traviatta for the Seattle Opera this weekend. Wish him luck.

Soupe à l'Oignon Gratinée

... also known as French Onion Soup.

I've been making this for years, but kind of according to my own recipe, which was good. But tonight I took a look at Julia Child's, and I have to say she totally kicked my ass. I'm really not surprised though - the woman did write a few cookbooks, after all.

I used to use red wine to fill out the broth. Julia's uses vermouth and brandy - a distinct improvement. However, it did mean that I was stuck with some "superfluous" red wine. On a Wednesday, no less! :)

SPICY chili

So, I threw all my usual chili ingredients in the crock this morning before showering. Turned it on low (10 hours) and gave it a little taste after about an hour, right before I left for work. Umm.. HOT! Guess I was a little too heavy on the cayenne/chili powder/crushed red pepper... I like it pretty dang spicy, but this had LOTS of kick to it already, and I know it's only going to get spicier while cooking all day. And I've got company to eat this tonight! They're like me--they enjoy the heat--but I'm thinking this is going to be close to nuclear by the time it's ready. I'd really rather not kill my company with this stuff.

Any suggestions on how to tone down the heat a bit? I've heard adding sugar helps, but I'm so afraid I'll add too much and it'll be gross. Anyone? Anyone?

Regal Bathroom

Hello, everyone. I'm really excited to be posting my VERY FIRST AFTER PICTURES! My home is 1950 cypress built. When I got the house, pretty much everything was pink (including the molding). What started out as a little project became a pain in the neck for me and my dad and a gut job.

In the end, I wanted something relaxing that would not overwhelm such a small space. I added a touch of royalty for my little girl, and voila.
